Neck Pain Treatments

The human neck is a very complex body part. It helps air get to your lungs, food to your stomach, and messages from the brain to the rest of the body. When you have neck pain, it can disrupt your entire life.  Dr. Andrew Harrison at Harrison Chiropractic Center in McHenry, IL takes a whole body approach to chiropractic care and while his first goal is to help relieve the pain, he will do a full body examination and may recommend x-rays to determine exactly what is going on in your neck.

Chiropractic adjustments/manipulation

Chiropractic spinal adjustments are one of the primary treatments used in chiropractic care. The Palmer Package involves a variety of adjustment techniques like Gonstead, Diversified, and Activator methods. It was developed at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa and is used by many chiropractors, including Dr. Harrison. When you have neck pain, one thing that needs to be done is make sure that there are no vertebrae out of alignment. The type of adjustment will be personalized to you.

Electric muscle stim

If your neck pain results from the soft tissue, electric muscle stimulation can help the muscles that are tight and painful to become relaxed. The electric current causes the muscles to contract and eventually get tired. When they are tired, they relax and this helps with pain relief.

Ultrasound therapy

Ultrasound therapy uses sound waves to produce heat in the affected area and to reduce inflammation and increase blood circulation. The sound waves help to repair the damage to the cells.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy uses cold to restrict the blood flow to the area and to relieve pain and inflammation. It brings cooling relief immediately after an injury and later as well. It may be used in combination with moist heat to get the optimal results.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy is a way to make chiropractic work even better. It is used to prepare the muscles and other soft tissue for treatments that your chiropractor will perform. It helps you to relax as well as breaking down the pressure points that may be causing pain and tension. The results of massage and chiropractic therapy are very complementary and both work better in combination.
